First Game At Goff Gym

The first game in St. Anthony’s Memorial Gymnasium (the current Goff Gym) was played on Friday, November 18, 1949 against the Altamont Indians. At that time St. Anthony was a member of the Midland Trail Conference and this was their second contest against Altamont with Altamont winning 57-25 the previous year.

The JV or Reserve contest started at 7:30pm and the Varsity contest started at 8:45pm. Admission was $.50 for adults and $.25 for students. The officials were Mascher from Dieterich and Hubert Griffith from Mt. Vernon. The head coach for Altamont was Ray Walker while first year coach Harry Forrester led St. Anthony.

The Varsity contest was a thriller with Altamont ultimately pulling off a 28-27 victory with a last second free throw by Bill Darlington. Frank Kabbes and Kenny Ludwig led St. Anthony with 11 points and 9 points respectively. The large crowd, estimated at 1000, also witnessed a thriller in the first game as the Reserve contest was won by the Bullpups (as the Reserve team was called then) 29-27 in overtime with Pat McDevitt and Bill Hess leading the team with 10 points each.
