OUR HOMECOURT Why such nostalgia over old Goff Gym. With a planned fond farewell worthy of a reverent hymn. There’s not much here that catches the eye except maybe our beloved mid-court creature. It’s mostly just a floor, a stage, a balcony and some bleachers. Fifty plus years of hosting ballgames, practices, recitals and classes. Not to forget all the dances and plays, pep rallies and masses. But we have all been to similar or much grander places. So what holds Goff Gym in our collective good graces. Because at St. A, basketball is king, winning a tradition. Not mentioning our Bulldogs would be a grievous omission. We have seen or have heard much of our favorite teams lore. We felt privileged to witness the feats on this floor. Win or lose, mostly win, the fans packed in here with pride. And often when things looked bleak, would help turn the tide. But for all the great teams, players and games year to year. Those things can’t completely explain why we hold this place so dear. It’s easier to see now a bit further removed from youth. If you think only basketball made this place, you’re not seeing the whole truth. Familiar and friendly faces were almost sure to greet. If you decided to walk in those doors just off Third Street. So many friendships built here in grades twelve back to one. So many memories shared here, the laughter, the heartbreaks, the fun. So many special people, volunteering almost without rest. So many proud parents watching kids try their best. This is why the HOME in our homecourt is truer than most. Filled with family and friends and a tradition to boast. Have no fear of forgetting, no memories can be tossed. Your time spent here has been shared thus never lost. Our Bulldog teams will play elsewhere in upcoming winning seasons. But a new gym will be special for all the same old reasons. Our loving Father has given us this special place, so in remembrance let us thank Him. And may God bless the next Home of the Bulldogs, as He had blessed Goff Gym. RDM ‘87 |
