The Classroom of Mrs. Dirks

If you have a child in seventh grade, I will have them in literature class.  We will read stories from our anthology.
The students will be given tests over the stories that are read.  They will be expected to know the vocabulary words
and to be able to answer the questions on the test in complete sentences.  I will always review two days before the test
and the students may take notes during the review.  There will be a test every two weeks.  Besides the short stories,
we will also read two novels:  Across Five Aprils (Civil War story) and I Have Lived A Thousand Years (Holocaust
story).  Both of these novels will be read in conjunction when social studies class will be studying the named eras.  The
students will also be given 10 minutes of every class period for Accelerated Reading and all class period on
Wednesday.  There will be NO HOMEWORK on Friday and NO TESTS on Monday.

Eighth grade students will have me for English and spelling.  At first we will review what has been covered in English
classes from previous years.  We will then add to that knowledge.  They will be given homework assignments, but they
will have time in class to work-on/complete the assignments.  Tests are given at the beginning and end of each unit.
Diagnostic and posttests are considered open book and open note tests.  No books or notes are allowed for unit tests.

In addition to English/Spelling, I will have the eighth graders for research paper.  We will do some of the preliminary
work in English class.  I will work with the students throughout this process.  Please talk with your child regarding
          the chosen topic.

My assignments are ALWAYS posted on my board, and the students are ALWAYS told to write the assignments in
the assignment book.  The assignments that are posted on the web page are subject to change.  Please check your
child's assignment book to make sure they are recording the assignments.
