"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace."
Stewardship is based on the understanding that all we have, and all we are, are gifts from God – our time, our talent, our skills, our resources, our possessions, and especially the gift of life itself.
At St. Anthony, the safety of all children participating in any parish sponsored activity, or who are recipients of any ministry, is our utmost concern. To faithfully know, love, and serve God, as stated in our parish mission, we must steadfastly protect the most vulnerable among us – the children entrusted to our care.
The U.S. Conference of Bishops in 2002 issued a document entitled "The National Charter for the Protection of Children" which is their "Promise to Protect, Pledge to Heal". Article 12 of the Charter mandates every diocese to establish safe environment programs to protect children from sexual abuse and child molestation. These programs make clear to clergy and all members of the community the standards of conduct for all persons in positions of trust. This guideline is the basis for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois "Safe Environment Program".
St. Anthony Parish adheres to this diocesan policy for adult volunteers (age 18 and older) who may come in contact with children. Highlights of the program include the following:
All adult volunteers must:
- Attend "Protecting God's Children for Adults" training where a code of conduct makes clear what acceptable behavior is. Adherence to the rules and guidelines in the code of conduct is a condition of providing services or working with the children or youth of our diocese. Volunteers are briefed on preventing, identifying, responding to, and reporting child abuse.
- Complete the criminal history background check initially and every five years by completing the Certification and Authorization Document.
- Continue ongoing education by completing the Virtus Online Bulletins (registration and bulletins available at www.virtusonline.org)
