Course Syllabus -- Anatomy

Course Description:  This course will consist of a detailed study of human structure and

function.  The ten major organ systems of the body will be surveyed

during this course.  Various dissections will be utilized in explaining

these systems.  This course is designed for college bound students

                                     interested in science.

Text:  The Human Body: Concepts of Anatomy & Physiology: Bruce D. Wingerd

Supplemental Materials:  Other materials being utilized in the course include the Internet and

various periodicals for research and laboratory simulations as well as speakers from various occupations in the health or medical field.

Teaching Methods:  Lecture and hands-on laboratory activities will be the main focus of the

course.  A research paper requiring some independent research will be

of each student.  Some peer teaching and presentations will also be a requirement during this course.

Course Outline:

·         First semester:

Organization of the Body (Weeks 1-7)

-          Directional planes, chemical basis, cells, tissues, organ systems preview

Peer teaching project (Weeks 7-8)

-          Student groups assigned a system to provide a presentation with visual aids

Systems that Cover, Support or Move (Weeks 9-17)

-          Pig kidney dissection

Semester exam (Week 36)

Goals/Objectives:  As a result of this course, students should be able to:

ü      Identify the chemical components of the body

ü      Identify the basic structure and function of cells and organelles

ü      Describe the function of each of the ten body systems and organs associated with each system

ü      Trace the path of blood through the heart and the path of air through the respiratory system

ü      Describe the special senses and the functional aspects of each associated with the nervous system

ü      Identify bones and muscles of the human body

ü      Relate the organs of the pig to the organs and systems of the human body

Assessment/Grading:  Various methods of assessment will be included throughout the year.

These methods include homework, lab data collection and worksheets, tests at the end of the chapter/unit, periodic quizzes, laboratory practicals, and a research paper.
