Recently, the parish program of Children's Liturgy was reignited for 4 and 5 year old children. Religious education classes last about 20 minutes. The children are led by two adults and a few youth aides to hear, discuss, and enjoy activities related to the Scripture readings of the Sunday. They are able to experience the message of God's word on a level of their understanding. Each Sunday they receive an activity leaflet to work with and to take home with them.
The coordinator of this program is Nancy Bushur if parents or volunteers would like more information. You may contact the parish office at 217-347-7129.
This program is available for every family that wishes to attend the 9:15 A.M. Sunday Liturgy. It is not required that parents register their children before they send them to enjoy the Children's Liturgy. An information letter will be sent to the parents by way of the children.
Each summer, an opportunity is offered for 3-8 year olds to have a fun week of Bible study and activities. The VBS session, beginning on a Monday and ending on Friday, usually occurs in June or early July. For many years, the two Catholic parishes in Effingham, Sacred Heart and St. Anthony of Padua, have alternated hosting the VBS with each parish providing coordinators, teachers, and teachers' aides.
Classes are divided according to age groups and size of the classes. The children experience age-appropriate Bible stories, plays, music, snacks, crafts, and activities around themes selected by the coordinators before the beginning of the VBS. A small fee is requested with registration to cover the cost of materials.
