Reading

Reading is the best way to improve your learning skills.  Almost everyday you will spend the last 10 to 15 minutes of class reading something you choose to read.  Always have a book in your cubby or with you to read during these quiet reading times.

BOOK POINTS

Each quarter you will be required to read 4 books or 20 points.  (You are welcome to surpass this goal.)  You must read in your reading level, which I have given you.  To earn credit for a book you need to take an Accelerated Reading Test or turn in a book report. (forms are located near computer in class) There are some very good books that are not part of our Accelerated Program.  You are welcome to read one of these books, but remember to get approval from me before you read the book,  All book reports are worth 1 book read.  Book points are part of your reading grade.

                         5 books or 21 or more A.R. points = 30 points      A+

                         4 books or 16 - 20 A.R. points      =  29 points     A

                         3 books or 11 - 15 A.R. points      =  27 points     B

                        2 books or 6 - 10 A.R. points         =  25 points     C

                        1 book or 1-5 A.R. points               = 23 points     D

                        0 books or 0 points will result in a     =  0 points     F

BONUS POINTS

Everyone messes up now and then and wishes they could do something to improve their grade.  I offer my Reading students an opportunity to do this by earning bonus points.  Bonus points can be earned in the following ways:

Signed Tests -All tests should be signed and returned.  If a test is returned the very next day then 10 bonus points are awarded.

Book Talks - Students may give a very short talk about a book they have read.  This can be done in class or in the library during library time.  This is worth 10 points.

Information - Bring in information or objects that pertain to the story we are talking about that week.

When a total of 100 points are earned, a student earns an extra A+ to be averaged with their other quarter grades.  Points do not carry over to the next quarter.

Math

Welcome to room 203 math!  Most days we will begin with a 3 minute timed fact test.  Next, we will correct the previous day's homework.  We will then have a short lesson directly from the book and then begin the day's homework assignment.

Timed Tests

A timed test is to help you to improve your math memory skills.  It is corrected, but never graded.  Your goal is to try to do more problems in less time than you did the test before.  You will keep a chart of your own tests to see how you are improving.  The chart will stay in your class math folder.

Homework

      - You will need plenty of loose-leaf paper.

      - Homework given each day except Friday.

      - Homework assignments are worth 10 points each. (see chart) Always check your work so that you get the most points possible!

      - Every 10 lessons homework points will be totaled and a homework grade given.  There are usually 3 or  4 of these totaled homework grades per quarter.  Occasionally a grade is given to one lesson.  You may not know before hand about this.

Homework Points

      0 - 3 wrong  = 10 points                   7 - 9 wrong = 6 points

     4 - 6 wrong   =  8 points                    10 or more wrong = 5 points

No homework = 0 points                  late homework = 4 points

TESTS

Tests are the biggest part of your grade.  I try to have tests on Fridays.  You will be given a pretest with the answers on the back to study a few days in advance so that you will know what kinds of problems to study.  It is your job to study these! ( Please return the sample test for 10 bonus points.)

All tests should be signed and returned. (10 bonus points if returned the next day)

Bonus Points

Bonus points may be earned by returning signed tests the next day and by returning pre- tests.  A total of 100 bonus points will earn a student an extra A+, which will be averaged with other grades at the end of each quarter.  Bonus points do not carry over to a new quarter.

Mid term grade

A mid-quarter grade will be sent home halfway through the quarter.  This is to be signed and returned.

Social Studies

Chapter Outlines

For each chapter or unit of study you will receive an outline.  It will include a list of the material to be covered, what assignments there will be, their due dates, and when the test will be.  All assignments that are to be turned in will receive a grade.  All assignments must have a name and homeroom number on them.  These outlines are to be signed and kept in your notebooks.

Be sure to save all papers till the end of each quarter.

Bonus Points

For students that wish to improve their grade I offer the chance to earn bonus points each quarter.  A total of 100 bonus points can be earned each quarter.  100 bonus points  gives you an extra A+  to be averaged with the other quarter grades.  You must earn a total of 100 points to earn and Extra A+.  Bonus points do not carry over to the next quarter.  There are several ways to earn bonus points:

      - 10 bonus points are rewarded to all "sign and return papers" that are returned the very next day.

     - 10 bonus points are given to information shared with the class pertaining to the unit of study we are working on at the time.  This can be a book, news article, something learned outside of class, an Internet piece, an object from the time period or place we are studying etc.

     - 10 - 50 bonus points are possible for extra projects.  For some chapters I will offer and explain how you can complete a model or project  and earn up to 50 points.  Points will be rewarded on neatness, effort, time, and knowledge of project.

Quarter Grade

You will receive  a mid-quarter grade the middle of each quarter.  This must be signed and returned!
