Study Skills

Welcome back to Study Skills Eighth Graders.  This will be the second year of Study Skills for you.  We will continue from where we finished in Seventh Grade.  The first topic to be addressed is Homework.

The following are some guidelines and helps for parents and guardians with regards to homework.

Have enough supplies:  Just as you need the right ingredients for a recipe or the right tools to tune up the car, your student needs the right "tools" to complete his or her homework.  Take your student shopping at the beginning of the school year and stock up on paper, pencils, notebooks, and other essentials.  Then have your child check his or her supplies periodically so you can replenish the supplies when needed.

Have a designated study area:  Help your student find a spot in the house that can be his or her study area.  Be sure the study area is free from distractions and has plenty of light.

Talk about homework with your child:  Be sure your child shows you his or her homework before and after it is completed.  Before your student begins, answer any questions he or she might have about completing the assignment.  When there are more than two assignments, help your student prioritize the order in which he or she should complete them.  When your student asks questions during homework, offer help, but don't give the answers.  Provide clues to steer your student in the right direction.  After the homework is complete, check to make sure it is done correctly.  You can help your child study for tests by asking review questions.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do to help your student become better is to show him or her that you value education.  Read, have conversations with your child, and keep mentally active yourself.  When you are a good role model for education, your student will want to learn and do well in school.  (Study Skills to the Rescue by Jan Brennan)
